Election Day

Throughout quarter 1, on the English side of Humanities, we focused a lot on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Using this book we were able to examine ‘real life’ ethical dilemmas, that can be applied to many ethical decisions that we face throughout our lives. Through Huck, we were able to see how difficult being torn between two decisions can be, and kind of how he handled it. There is always this sense of being extremely indecisive, and constantly toggling between one or the other. Throughout our lives, we face these decisions that we honestly cannot decide between the two, and in some sense, I feel that Huck Finn allows us to see how Huck deals with everything, but again Huck is a child and does not have as much wisdom as someone who was more grown.

In terms of ethical decisions and this year’s election, I feel like decided between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is not necessarily an ethical decision, but evaluating their policies and their ethics are really important to choosing the candidate that you support the most. My people believe that Trump, Clinton, or both have deformed ethics, which makes many people, not like them. The two candidates have very opposing views, so you are either very conservative or very liberal. I feel like in this election there is really no in between, and it shouldn’t necessarily be a hard decision since people should be able to side with conservative or liberal quite easily. Although, for some people, the genuinely do not know if they should side with liberal candidate of conservative candidate.

When looking at the politics more closely, and less at the person, there is this constant underlying theme of ethics. Many controversial topics have two sides, and the sides are very hard to choose between. One of the controversial topics that I believe relates closely to the ethical dilemma that Huck was facing is on the topic of abortion. This decision between pro-life and pro-choice is one of the hardest to choose between, but it something that you really have to decide and take into consideration when voting in this year’s election. On one hand, Trump is pro-life, but on the other Clinton is pro-choice. Voters have to make a decision of whether they believe it is right that the fetus survives, or it is the right of the woman to choose how she conducts her life.

On the other hand, the reason that many people find that this election is going to be hard, and the fact that it is hard to choose a candidate is because of the fact that both candidates have a lot of negative attention pointing at them. There are countless inappropriate things that Trump has done, but there are also illegal things that Hillary has done. Both of the candidates have the press on their tails, following their stories that bring a lot of negative attention their way. It is hard to choose between too candidates that seem to have equally bad things piling up against their campaign.

This election, I am hoping to see Hillary Clinton win for a few reasons. One of the biggest reasons is because I generally do not believe that Trump is fit to be president. I agree that he is a good businessman, and yes he has made the Trump company very successful, but that in no way means that he is going to be a successful president. He has the lives of millions of people in his hands, and I do not think that his policies are going to benefit the general welfare. Additionally, I do not feel that Trump has a equal level of respect for everyone in society. There seems to be this idea swirling around that Trump does not respect women. Although, I think that is an overly general statement, at the same time a lot of evidence would concure with the statement that he does not respect women. Overall, I believe that through her policies, and stability, Hillary Clinton will make a more fit president for the next four years.
